Thermal energy is transferred by conduction through certain materials such as metals but not through other materials such as wood. “The wooden spoon does not conduct heat at all, whereas the metal spoon was quite a good conductor of heat” (Brook et al., 1984). Students may think that a material either conducts thermal energy or it doesn’t.
