Item NG063006: When a cold bottle is placed in a cabinet, the temperature of the bottle will increase and the temperature of the air in the cabinet will decrease because energy will be transferred from the air to the cold bottle.

A person takes a cold bottle of water out of the refrigerator and places it in a small empty cabinet.  The person closes the cabinet door.  The air in the cabinet is warmer than the bottle of water. What will happen to the temperature of the bottle of water and the temperature of the air in the cabinet and why?

  1. The temperature of the bottle of water will increase, and the temperature of the air in the cabinet will decrease because energy will be transferred from the air in the cabinet to the cold bottle.
  2. The temperature of the bottle of water will increase because new energy will be made as the cold bottle warms up, but the temperature of the air in the cabinet will not change.
  3. The temperature of the bottle of water will stay the same because it will not lose any energy, and the temperature of the air in the cabinet will decrease because coldness will be transferred from the cold bottle to the air.
  4. The temperature of the bottle of water and the temperature of the air in the cabinet will stay the same because no energy is transferred between the air and the bottle.
